TO A FRIEND

Dedicated by a seemingly un-possessive friend to a friend who has absolutely no idea.

The story of any shyster's life. That is, any possessive shyster. I mean, any possessive shyster who loves someone. You know, any possessive shyster who loves someone so much. Like, any possessive shyster who loves someone so much it hurts.

OK, so you get the idea.

She thought her friend

Was one among a million;

She didn't know, though,

She was all her friend had.

This is such a cliche, I know -

A million stars in the sky,

But just a single moon up there.

I know, it's sad, oh, so sad.

So many serial lights on a wire -
Would you let just one glow?
So many buds out in the garden,

Would you let just one bloom?

It pained that one star, still.

She wasn't the only one.

The moon had lots to care for -

So, for just this lone star,

She couldn't make room.

The star, in all her ignorance,

Could use only familiar metaphors.

She didn't know how to express,

Say out loud that she too was there.

She didn't know the fancy stuff;

She could only smile and pretend

She wasn't holding the tears at bay,

She's not had more than she could bear.

So with this cliched, boring song,
She aimed to evoke a smile,
But not for dawning realization.

She hoped to sing this last song

Before she faded away, fast,
Into the gaping, huge nothingness.

Before she was a thing of the past,

Absorbed into painful oblivion.

you sound so sad... as if you are fed up... none deserves so much attention.. moon fades away, glows again.. the star remains the same...
always shining..
with or without tears...
i understand.. i guess
